Ok, I took a chance on a ebay "bad picture" auction. The detail revealed in the "bad" picture was quite good, so I thought I might be catching a great deal. Well, once I got it, it is quite grungy. Here is the ebay listing http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...TRK:MEWAX:ITAnd here are my photos: My photos don't really revealed how not pleasing the coin is. You can see good detail, but too much crud. With that being said, I'm ok with the purchase (a lesson learned) but was wondering if a Xylene soak might be in order or what?

Couldn't hurt anything to give it a soak. To bad on the buy. I always hate when that happens. I am now to the point I never buy a coin if I'm not sure of if there is damage.

interesting, they have their own grading system: "The following is the grading system first developed by Goldmine Records. Virtually all methods currently in use for the grading of records, is based in some way, shape, or form, on this system. Rather than offer some variation of the original system first developed by Goldmine, the Record Collector's Guild will display the Goldmine record grading method in it's entirety. "
but they don't list a grade of: EXCELLENT CONDITION
They deserve a neg for misleading pictures.

Tough call here. ebay pics do hide some of the corrosion. Although the details are close to XF, it is damaged and probably worth less than what you paid. That being said, you sound like this was a learning experience so $40 isn't too expensive! And yes, I'd do something with it. I doubt if much can be removed from the surfaces but you can prevent further corrosion. Good Luck!

They deserve a neg for misleading pictures. I agree the seller had misleading pics. I would give him a chance to make right on the deal though before leaving a neg. Making right imo would be a full refund including shipping both ways.

Did you read that grading system? Have you put this coin on a turntable to check what it sounds like? I kind of like that coin, actually, it has character, and always wonder who has handled it, what it's seen, where it's been, etc.

After looking at the listing and his feedbacks, this guy basically sells old records and baseball cards, I didn't see other coins for sale so he might not have known the coin was in that poor a condition.

Yeah, I saw the record grading system and the fact he sells vinyl LPs. I thought this part of it would cause him to take a unfavorable picture and I might pick up a deal. Oh well, I will soak it in Xylene or Acetone and see what happens.

I emailed the seller and he said I could send it back for full refund. Now I can apply the $40 to a better grade 1/2 cent.
