for this bargain cob on ebay

Yessir, this one looketh pretty piratey. Planchet cracks of this size are hard to fake, too. It appears to have been minted in that part of Mexico most of us know as Bolivia. I can get these by the handful for under $100 with 2 dates, with just as bad a strike and an uncracked planchet. I'm not willing to spring for the additional $1900 just for that fragment of a third date.

I have never been a big fan of cob coins because they are easily forged. I also have never studied the die varieties, but the length of the planchet cracks makes me think counterfeit. There would have to be a serious flaw in the planchet to produce a crack of that size.

Bob, I spent a lot of time looking through HJB's plastic tub full of 4R cobs, and got used to seeing things like this:

https://www.harlanjberk.com/worldco...SC&newsince=

Most of the HJB cobs with readable dates have been sold at this point. I suspect based on the date & appearance that the ebay coin came from the same source. Sedwick theorizes that a lot of these 1665-1670 cobs came from a find in Seville harbor. HJB's are not corroded like seawater cobs, and many make full weight on uncracked planchets, but they're as black as coal and horribly struck.

4 reales Potosi but looks questionable. I'm not an expert on cobs but for the price it's a NO NO.
