Are the early proof sets worth more in their original packaging, or would it be better to get them graded. I know someone with 36-39 in original packaging, and they would like your thoughts on getting them graded. I have one very bad pic of the coins. I know it would cost several hundred dollars to get all of these graded. Would it be worth it? Do any of the grading companies grade the whole set or just individual grades?

Those are not in original mint holders.

I believe the early proof sets (1936 to 1955) had each coin in individual soft plastic holders and placed together in a box.

Later proof sets (1955 to 1964) were housed as a set in a single soft plastic (flat pack) holder (like modern mint sets).

1955 was available in both the box and flat pack.

Only modern proofs (1968 to date) are in hard plastic holders.

I have only ever owned 1968 to date proof sets, so please correct me if I am wrong!

No problem, we are all here to learn!

To answer your original question (which I feel bad that I overlooked), I would personally not bother getting them graded. Others may have a different opinion though.

That said, they are good looking sets from what I can see!

I'm a newbie, but I'd check the individual dates for values, and if any were worth 200 bucks or more, I'd have them slabbed. Otherwise, I'd enjoy them as they are.
