hi. a friend of mine found this while he was fishing. he was just throwing pebbles into a lake when he saw this and thought it was a dirt M&M. he gave it to me and said I could keep it and if I found out what it was, that I would tell him. I'm guessing that its native of this continent since it was found at the lake. it looks to be made of brass or gold. the obverse seems to be bumping out maybe a face and the back seems to have a square with a design in the middle which I'm guessing is an animal or something. does anyone know what it is?

Welcome to the forum!

This one is going to be a bit difficult. Where was it found? We have members from all over the globe and knowing a country may help. It looks like most of the details are corroded, but I'm willing to try for you.

Ernest,
Interesting find. What is the diameter? Can you weigh it?
Welcome.

it appears to be around 16 mm and I dont think I have a small enoguh scale to measure how much it weighs. its pretty thick though compared to my other roman coins. the friend who gave it to me said he found it at the lake so I'm guessing its from around here unless some collector dropped it which is highly unlikely. upon closer examination, it seems to be a snake on the back, I'm not sure if you can see it in the pictures but it seems to be showing now. I think the aztecs or something like that had a snake on a cactus on their coin. maybe something like that?

Hi Ernest,
Just trying to figure out if we're talking about a lake in North America, Asia, Europe, etc- your profile doesn't say where you're located. If it was a lake in CA say, I'd guess some sort of modern day token, or even a button. But even if we're talking CA, I'd have different thoughts if it was Claire Engle lake (filled up in the 1960s, I think, but a dragon motif would be possible as Weaverville had one of the largest 19th century Chinese populations in the US at one point), than Clear Lake or Lake Tahoe...

I have racked my eyes looking at the photos and to me it looks like a Roman coin. Just because this particular coin was found here in the states doesn't exactly help. The coin could have easily been lost a year before being found. With the corrosion on the coin, it is going to be very difficult identifying it from a photo. I would suggest that you take the coin to a dealer or mail it to one. If you need a dealer in your area, just give me the closet major city and I will recommend one for you. Sorry I could not be of more help.

well I'm not sure if the one I used to go to would know anything about these but that was about two years ago when I started. I never saw him having any ancient coins at all and dont know when they became available to the public so I'm not sure about that dealer. I live near LA but I dont know a lot of places around there.
