"1936" is the date in the Ethiopian calendar that appears on the coin (that's what the symbols below the portrait are). EE 1936 was AD 1944. However, the people that struck Ethiopia's coins were lazy and couldn't be bothered changing the date; these coins with scalloped edges were actually struck in 1952 and 1953.
