Christian,

I picked up a bunch of German coins on Wednesday and in the bunch was a 1931-A Proof 1 Pfennig and a 1934-A Proof 1 Pfennig. They both appear to be about PF-60 to PF-62 (I am not very knowledegable on grading German coins) and was wondering if you could tell me what would be the values?!!

I also got a bunch of other interesting coins in the purchase including a "Triple Struck" 1924-F 5 Rentenpfennig piece.

Thanks...Frank

hello Huntsman-Frank
I am not christian.
However, I have the same access info as he has.
here are links to your coins.
Grades you look for is SS-VZ.
IF there are proofs, which is unlikely at the time, then they would be fairly valuable und would sell best at a German auction.
I have seen PCGS and NGC and others grade German coins as proof, when in fact NO proofd were ever made. It is in the different grading method.

Here is where you find just about every German, Austrian and Swiss coin, as well as others.

and here is ongoing auction, same outfit:

Here are your coins:

hhbkiddo,

Thanks for the links! Although I am pretty rusty in Deutsche and have trouble with German numismatic terms, I was ableto determine that some of the coins I picked up are fairly valuable. The two Proof coins I mentioned were marked that way and may be just miss-marked circulation strike coins. However, they have a much stronger strike and appearance than the other same or similar Dated coins. I have an old (probably 1995 issued) book called Collecting World Coins which appears based on information from Krause and in it, it notes Common Date Proofs for the Series but does not give Dates. Just like some of the Grading Companies, I would imagine that this reference could also be in error when it comes to Proof issues of older German coins!

Primarily I collect coins from "my" country, the Federal Republic of Germany, and some other European (mostly euro) countries. So I am not exactly familiar with such pieces. However, as hhbkiddo wrote, actual proof pieces from those years are very rare. According to the Jaeger catalog, the 1 pfennig coin in proof was made in 1925 E and 1927 E only ...

Is the 24F 5Rpf Triple-Struck or is it 'hub-doubling'? I've a few early Al-Bro Rpf that show signs of being strike with dies suffering from some Hub-doubling...

and nice pick up on the proofs... I'd like that 34A, being in my little 'area of expertise'.. :)

Zaggy,

I checked the coin over several times and I am sure that it is Triple Struck with two distinct sets of letters and some details other than the Primary! It kind of threw me as the first Secondary set is fairly close and appeard similar to both Machine and at the same time Hub Doubling without real Split Serifs just an overlap. Then I noticed the third set which is weaker and virtually indistinct in some areas but medium to strong in others. It appears that much of the third strike was oblitirated by the second strike then the Primary strike somewhat flattened out both previous strikes.

I will try to take some pictures of all of the coins...especailly the possible Proof coins. It will be hard to get the details of the extra strikes to show up on the 1924F 5 RentenPfennig piece but I will try! If you can send me an email, I will try to send you some pics as well.
