Dots on one side, some kind of dashes or squiggles on the other.. haven't seen this type before and can't find anything like it in Krause. Any ideas?

G'day, I don't know much about German coinage, but by 1917, the British blockade, on top of waging war on two fronts for three years, was biting deep. Apparently, a lot of coins of that era were made of zinc. The identical coin to yours is currently for sale on a well-known-auction-site (350245051657).
Be it sever so humble, an interesting piece of history.

Is this one of the patterns?
Notice that there is no mint mark.
These are mentioned in Krause - no pics tho.

Hi Peter.. yes, I do have a couple like the one being auctioned. (and some 1, 2 and 5 pfennigs as well ) I like them. I've just never seen one with the dots on the obverse before.

wwhitman, I am not sure. I did see a couple of patterns listed and checked online krause in case they had anything updated but there are no pictures and no details on what any patterns might look like.

This looks like the Iron issue, km#20. 1917 G.
Picture is incorrect in the current edition KM.

Right, and that also applies to the pieces of the early 20s and of the 40s. This particular piece however, the type with the big pearls around the eagle (Jaeger 298), is not really a zinc coin. It is an iron piece that was then sherardized (zinc coated). The other type, small pearls and no MM (Jaeger 299), is zinc indeed.

speak of the devil:

got a parcel yesterday of miscellaneous world coins.
This morning, I found a 10-pfennig of 1917 among them:
mine is non-magnetic; I can see a "G"; but no pearls around the eagle.
