I came across a dozen odd gold coins in cleaning out a safe for an estate. I can't find the exact coin on the web.

They are half dollar california gold coins.

On the front is an Indian Head, with 1854 date, and on back is California Gold across the top, 1/2 in the middle, and an animal, probably a bear?, at the bottom.

Any idea what these are, and possible worth?

Many thanks. Tim

You have replica California fractional gold coins, none of the genuine ones featured a bear but that is a common design on the imitations. Most of them were made in the 20th century, some are actually made of gold but most are just gold plated. Even if you have one of the gold ones, the amount is very small.

Tim,

Welcome to the forum.

California produced "Fractional Gold" during this period. Pictures and descriptions are at this link
http://www.coinnews.net/2008/06/18/...ection-4188/

These have also been widely counterfeited and crude to sophisticated examples exist.

If you could post a picture of the obverse and reverse it would help us make a call on authenticity.

Thanks for the quick replies. Will try to get a photo and post. The envelope had written on outside "replicas" so I think that may be what they are. Tim
