jwitten, is that coloration caused by concentrations of copper in the alloy? Or something else? I have been trying to learn how gold coins change color.

Some Gold coins have Silver in the alloy and others have Copper in the alloy mix.
I would think that the difference in the alloy mix would produce different tones .

This one was hard to get right. 1885-P.

Oooooh, that's pretty! I generally see that color on silver and find it unflattering, but I really like the way that coin looks.

Morgans and large coins in general are pretty difficult to capture just right if you don't have a dozen lamps. I haven't saved a single photo I have taken of my Morgan toners, yet, so.. Photos like this seem soooo impressive to me.

The above photo was taken using a ring flash at the front of the lens, so it is similar to "a dozen lamps". I am still experimenting with this new to me flash and the four different lenses I have. I always make sure that everything is level and square, and often use a combination of natural lighting, fill lighting, and flash. Sometimes I use the built-in flash on the camera with a sheet of printer paper as a diffuser or reflector (for most macro work the lens casts a hard shadow when using the built-in flash).
