While watching another unrealistic Las Vegas episode (unrealistic because of wacko non-casino scenarios, no ugly patrons or staff, etc.,I saw a story about the lawyer handling an estate who "appropriated" an 1895 silver dollar. While leaving the casino it fell out of his pocket and hit the floor. It wasn't housed in any type of protective holder(again unrealistic). For a proof only issue OUCH !

OH NO ! The 1895 was in today's rerun also. It was used, unprotected, to call a $60,000 bet in a poker game. The coin holder had 4 queens and lost to a straight flush. At the end of the episode, the hand winner who happened to be the casino owner put the coin in what looked like a Library of Coins or a Dansco album. Probably not MS proof anymore !

I remember that episode when it first aired. A.J. Cooper (Tom Selleck) was was the Montecito owner in question. Sam Marquez (Vanessa Marcil) was the one that lost the bet. If I recall correctly, he ended up giving it back to her on a later episode.

Did you also notice that the album did not have any of the plastic slides installed? They probably caused too much glare on the HD cameras.

It is funny that until this post I had never even heard of this show before.

But in general, whenever you see coin collecting depicted in the mainstream media it usually is totally unrealistic. Often all coins are depicted as being worth a fortune and condition is never even regarded. Supposedly avid numismatists are seen holding coins improperly and only care about the value of a coin without really having an appreciation for it. In addition, often all numismatists are depicted as being extremely wealthy speculators rather than hobbyists. It's no wonder that when a friend of acquaintance first finds out that you are a numismatist that they react quite strangely.

Yes friends of mine always say I am in far to good of shape to collect coins. They just assume that I should be pale and fragile, with buddy holly style glasses and wear cardigans.

Feel complemented if you collect gold coins. For it is a different situation with coppers. TV or movie portrayal always paints any Cent collector as the fragile little pale guy that is super nervous and lives in a basement.

Funny thing. Coin Guy posted on this forum today an ebay listing for an 1895 Proof dollar (cleaned). It's probably still in better shape than the one depicted in the show.
