Here is an interesting counterfeit silver bullion coin:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...m=8417168164

In this case, the add text says it is dated 1879. The scan seems to support the date. But the fact of the matter is that these coins were not made until the 1970s - a hundred years later. - So what is this?A non-silver forgery made to trick novices interested in owning silver. Most are white metal copies made from altered transfer dies.

There are many other bullion items that fall into this group - most are fantasies - dates that were never made. The following coin often appears for sale as REAL. This particular auction properly describes it as a Replica but many sellers do not:

My advice is very simple - always be sure a coin actually existed before you buy it.

In the first auction you linked to, the coin doesn't even look like silver to me. If there is any in it, I would tend to think it was a very small amount.

I am encouraged by the second auction you posted. It's always nice to see that there are still honest people out there.

The second coin was likely a purchase gone wrong. The seller was most likely taken in and he is trying to recover something. That happens all too often to honest guys.

I got a reply from the seller in the first case. He sees the problem with an early date ONZA and now is of the opinion that under magnification - he thinks the 8 is really a 9. But that doesn't help the problem that you pointed out - the color - and the obvious fact that the coin simply does not appear to be made from real dies.

Here is a new deceptive auction:

http://cgi.ebay.com/1932-1oz-Silver...mZ8418483064

The add looks straight forward a high grade silver ounce. But in this case, this is 0.3856 ounces of pure silver. How is that an ounce? Even if you look at total weight of the coin that is 16.66 grams or roughly HALF an ounce.

To me this is a deceptive sale. A novice might see ounce - check the spot value and bid several times waht they should.
