Looks like an imitation viking coin of Anlaf Guthfrithsson, 939-954. Bottom picture(rotate 180) depicts a raven.

Looks like an attempt at a copy of an old coin of Ferdinand's.. this isn't the exact one, but this is what his coins looked like, so you'll get an idea: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Antiques-c...42091251.htmYou could do a few searches on his coins and maybe get a closer one. |

 to the community. It looks like a lead seal. If there is a hole on the edge running all the way through than it may be that. What is the size and weight of it? It looks like it's pretty thick. Any idea what the metal is? Interesting piece whatever it is. |

Here's a picture of it with a quarter so you can see how big it is.  There's no hole anywhere and I don't know what kind of metal it is. It has a weird metallic smell I can't place... |

It does look a bit like a bird.. I was trying to figure out the lettering on the other picture  Al el Ferd.. etc Sorry, I must have coin translations on the brain and not looking at the 'whole picture'. Nice going, DCH  ..and where are my manners..  Welcome litenarata! |

I suppose it would be difficult (or very expensive) to authenticate. Kinda like a Spanish piece of eight I once had.

If there was a chance that it was real, it would definitely be worth trying to authenticate - an authentic raven coin would be very expensive. Sadly, this one is definitely not genuine. It's too thick, for starters - mediaeval pennies are thinner than that. The style is wrong, too - this die looks to have carved lettering; medieval lettering was made cunieform-style, with a series of punches.
