It was only marked as Japanese - Hansatsu - Paper Note - Pre 1868 Here it is: Any info you can provide or links to info on this type of old Japanese paper currency would be greatly appreciated. Sap Moderator Australia 16837 Posts	Posted 10/18/2009 12:29 am Hansatsu ("clan notes") are the Japanese equivalent of 20th century German "notgeld". Prior to the Meiji Restoration in the mid-1800's, these notes were issued by merchants, bankers, leaders of noble families - basically by anyone who wanted to. Like notgeld, these notes are not listed in the "regular" world banknote catalogues such as Pick; you'd need specialized reference books for them. This Polish website seems to be one of the better online catalogues that Google could find, but I doubt it's anywhere near comprehensive. Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis Report this Post to the Staff

The link to the Polish website was especially great as it has an exact (or very close to it) reference w/scan to a similar Hansatsu to the one I have. Very interesting stuff!
