I purchased it at a show today. It was only marked as Japanese - Hansatsu - Paper Note - Pre 1868

echizento: Wow, thanks for the info! Are you able to read it or is there some site or book that you used for reference? I'm really interested in Japanese history and these Hansatsu notes are intriguing to me. I'd like to know more about them.

Hansatsu ("clan notes") are the Japanese equivalent of 20th century German "notgeld". Prior to the Meiji Restoration in the mid-1800's, these notes were issued by merchants, bankers, leaders of noble families - basically by anyone who wanted to. Like notgeld, these notes are not listed in the "regular" world banknote catalogues such as Pick; you'd need specialized reference books for them.

This Polish website seems to be one of the better online catalogues that Google could find, but I doubt it's anywhere near comprehensive.

Sap: Thanks! That was very helpful as well. The link to the Polish website was especially great as it has an exact (or very close to it) reference w/scan to a similar Hansatsu to the one I have. Very interesting stuff!
