we are going to need clearer pictures than this and also going to need to see the reeding. It looks like that thing circulated a long time to be struck on a silver planchet but its not impossible

silver quaters are around 4.25 each

or around 16-17 times face

that 10-12 face was back when silver was at 18-19
silver is almost 25$ a ounce now
(124) This link is not allowed by the Staff .com/

i just sold some silver at 16 times face alot better then just 5 months ago at 12 times face

4.25 x40 = 1700 a roll
10 rolls = 1700 for ten rolls or quaters

Frank, why do you think it is silver? The look of it is not enough to tell if a coin is silver. There are several things that can hide the copper on the edge. The weight of the coin in grams is the best first starting point. Also, welcome to the forum!

The weight of a clad quarter is 5.67 grams and a silver quarter is 6.25 grams.

Interesting comments. Are you just guessing? I ask because there were plenty of clear pics in the thread. I know because I took them. The coin was legit. Here...

It reminds me of the 1970-S proof silver quarter that was intentionally overstruck on a 1900 Barber quarter. Q. David Bowers discussed the piece in one of his quarter books, and I believe the FBI seized the piece as it being offered in a very public sale, so there is a precedent for confiscation of illegal coins. I would certainly keep quiet about something like this if I came into possession of such an item.

It looks like someone filed or wore down the details of a 1960 quarter and then restruck it with the 1972 verison. So really only worth the weight in silver

I'm thinking that happened when the devices of the '64 took the full pressure of the '72 die fields, flattening out the previously-struck design--no filing was needed? I'm glad I saw this error, even if it was "helped" by a mint employee.

I believe that was what was said by PCGS. They said it was an intentional error where they suspect an employee of the mint did it with a coin they brought in. You can see it was a 1964 Quarter because the date still shows a little. I am not sure any TPG will authenticate this coin because this is a possibility even though there are other ways for this to happen but their theory would have the greatest chance of being true. It could have been stuck in a hopper for 8 years and just became unstuck when it was struck again in 1972 (slim chance but possible) and there are a few more theories that could take place but there is no way to prove any of them so that is why PCGS would not authenticate it
