I have two questions I would be interested in hearing opinions about:

1) What would a fair ratio be? I would imagine this is done everyday; I was curious about the rate of 40% halfs to 50 cents in 90% US coin.

2) The ratio should not change, no matter what silver is per oz. Is this a true statement?

Your thoughts, if you please!

I think the ratio is 2.45 to 1. 90 pct. half has .3617 ounces of silver. Current value is $13.79. 40 pct half has .1479 ounces of silver. Current value is $5.64. If you take the two silver weights and figure this, it comes out at 2.45 to 1. If you take the two values to figure this, it comes out all haywire. Sooooo........I'm not sure.
In answer to your second question, yes, that is correct.

The only thing is there are a lot of people who do not like 40% silver so you may have to give up more 40% in order for them to give up 90% which is highly preferred by many.

I agree with mkman123, there is a premium on top of the silver content ratio. This is because most people prefer 90%, and it takes more processing to get pure silver out of 40% as compared to 90%.

And to answer your second question, yes, the ratio should NOT change with price.

schnauzer's calcs are correct.
For me, I'd want/expect about a 10% discount on the 40%. That would put the ratio close to 2.75:1 or 55 40% halves per roll of 90% halves.

These are the kind of answers I was looking for.

Would one expect a dealer to trade at 3:1? I have been wanting to approach a local dealer with a proposition, and need a little knowledge first!

Would you say that, with the price of silver up, the value of a Walker or Barber half should not be much (if any) above silver content?

My dealer does not care if I take barbers, walkers etc out of his junk box. He actually prefers to buy my Kennedys, because they have not circulated and have less sliver wear. He says he has an easier time unloading his full weight Kens as opposed to Barbers and Walkers in his junk bin!

You lose 457.25 on the 40% coins due to the spread.
1108.25 for the 90% coins.

Look at the percentages of the haircuts.
