I have been using a Cannon Powershot SD1000 with some success; Although I don't have a proper frame. I have been using two table lamps placed on their side near the subject using CFLs as a light source. When I take the picture, I get a very dark picture. I then use my photo editing software to bring the exposure up to just about maximum and this gives me a great picture of the coin. I seems to work whether the coin is in a 2x2 holder or not.
By the way, on the camera I have a manual Macro option that I use, I just need to remember to put the camera back to auto for my wife
Hope this works for someone

Interesting way of doing it. If it works well then that is the important thing!

It seems to, not a big fan of the shadows it casts over the coin, but until I figure something better out, it is dirt cheap!! More money for coins!!
