I have purchased a Canon G9 (used) and am ready to begin some coin shots. I have decided to set the camera on Av (I set the aperture and the camera sets the shutter speed automatically). Where should I set the aperture? White balance? Should I auto focus or manual? ISO 100? What about exposure compensation? And metering? I am using all original equipment that came on the camera. Going to try without macro setting. Have 2 GE halogen 75 flood bulbs on goose necks. Any other suggestions? Thanks

Sorry I didn't post earlier - I didn't see this thread until I was getting ready for work yesterday. Nothing's more frustrating than a thread I really want to post in, and don't have the time. OK. I would suggest that, rather than Av, you use the G9 on full Manual. Aperture is the least-likely setting you'll be varying - settle on the widest (lowest-numerically) aperture that will put the whole surface of the coin in focus, and leave it there. The only thing you ultimately want to be varying (and should need to vary) is the shutter speed and lighting positions to cover the range from brown copper to lustrous silver. Did the camera come with the software? Canon publishes some neat tethered-camera software that will allow you to connect the camera to your computer via USB, and control the whole process from the keyboard/mouse. If this is a possibility for you, let me know and we can go from there.

Thanks SuperDave.
The camera did come with software, which I will install asap. I hope the software will allow me to use the computer via usb to control the camera. If not, I might try BreezeSystems. Do you know anything about that software?

I have both. I bought the Breeze Systems software because previous versions of Canon's software wouldn't work worth a darn with WinXP; it's much improved now and for your use it'll do fine. You can control the camera pretty much 100% from the keyboard and mouse; it beats the stuffing out of any other method.

Great, SuperDave! What BreezeSystem products did you buy? PSRemote is the main product for Canon PowerShot cameras, but BreezeBrowserPro and DownloaderPro sound interesting?

PSRemote. The others are just file management systems, completely irrelevant to me. I've been building computers and installing operating systems for 25 years; using the Windows filesystem is second nature. I could make those just as irrelevant to someone else in ten minutes of instruction, as well; the Windows filesystem is that easy.

SuperDave, Hello! I was reading this thre, and am wondering where I can get that PSRemote. My camera, ( Canon powershot A590 IS), is not supported, and I don't want to have to but another one. It does a nice job, but even tho it has Browser EX, and that does mention the remote operation of the shutter, Canon does not support. Any suggestuions? Thanks, in advance. Dick

PSRemote doesn't work with the A590 either, Dick - you're pretty much limited to operating that one manually.

I never reject, or m,ind an extra opinion, because when I seek, info, I hope for plenty. Thank you both for your info. I had a hunch that what Superdave said, might be the case. There is another thing that was recommended, but it was a "no show", so I didn't get to try. This is down to the last resort, before buying another camera, but I had to specify, what I need in particular. Just about any camera will do the job, providing the "stand", is steady enough. In my case, "NO WAY"! LOL So I asked. I'll look into the Breeze systems software. Maybe i'll get lucky. NOT! Not supported. I saw a canon S120 S that might do. If anyone knows anything about this camera, I want to know if it has semote shutter control. Anyone? thanks, Later: I contacted Canon, and they say there is NO remote shutter comntrol for the powershot A590 IS. Their exact words: Die Suche nach "canon remote shurrer control for A590 IS powesshot" ergab keinen Treffer. different plans have been made. Thanks to all concerned. Dick
