I have collected my modern coins for years as
mint and proof sets. Kept it that way until I
got the Dansco bug recently. Some sets were
still sealed in the mint mailers. I never really
thought much about pulling them all apart and
doing a close inspection. Even the ones I have
pulled and looked at, it never was more than a
glance really.

Well, now that I am transferring them into their
Danscos... I am finding all sorts of problem coins.

What a joke...
I pulled my 2008 mint set from it's 'never been
opened' mint cardboard mailer only to find the
Philly half with several long scrapes, almost
gouges, across the obverse!

That was the worst damage/problem, but far from
the only. I buy my coins from the mint annually
for the sole purpose of getting a complete set of
nice coins and having virgins on hand. I don't
care for the idea of hunting down single coins
and paying a premium after the fact. Seems very
inefficient and time consuming. But with the crap
I have been getting the last 10 years, I might as
well be on the ground floor since I have so many
'virgin' coins that need upgrades from day 1.

Anyone else feel this way?
I am so frigging mad I could spit.
Pay all that dough and they send you crap.

If you are curious, my next worst problem coin was
a 2004 mint set nickel with dark spots and a coating
that almost looked like something was spilled on it.
Put a drop of tea or cola on a coin and let it dry,
then wipe off the thickness, and that is what the
nickel looks like, straight from the good ol' mint.

Thats the same problem I got into when I started putting my danscos together, after filling the holes with the coins I already had from mint sets 10% just didnt have the eye appeal as the rest of the set so I had to go on the hunt for singles. Makes me sick! The mint has gotten really sloppy over the last decade.

Well, I have mixed feelings then.
Misery loves company, but I wouldn't wish
some of these coins I have onto my enemies!

You're dead on too, it's about 10% that are
just unpresentable...

I guess I have been lucky. I have been ordering from the mint since the late 80's, and haven't had any problems with the coins that I have gotten. After seeing threads like this, I have been checking much more diligently, also.

I'm sure that I just jinxed myself!

I don't know if there is a different set that everyone is talking about, but here is the blurb from the mint:

"United States Mint uncirculated coins are struck on special presses using greater force than circulating coins, producing a sharp, intricately detailed image, and feature the satin finish introduced in 2005. The coins are sealed in a blister and displayed in a folder. One folder contains coins bearing the "P" mint mark and the other contains coins bearing the "D" mint mark."

Hope that helps. Even if it is treated like a circulated coin, there should not be massive scrapes and such.
Rest in Peace

Isn't a mint set just a packaged group of coins guaranteed to be uncirculated and nothing more?

At one time, that was entirely the case. Since 2005, Mint Sets have been issued in a special satin finish so technically they are a third type of striking in addition to business strike and proof. They are struck on lower speed higher force presses and do get extra gentle handling or at least they are supposed to. Part of the problem is that they are producing so many different products in multiple variations(blame shared between the Mint and Congressionally mandated programs) that overall quality control has dipped a bit.
