Hey guys,

Awhile ago, I had sent two Indian Head cents in to PCGS for grading. One was an 1862 that looked like it was the wrong color, and the other was an MS 1866 that looked like it could have pulled a 63 or a 64 easily.

To my surprise, the 62 came back AU-58 and the 66 came back as genuine not gradable. My guess is they thought the 66 had an older cleaning, but the coin is just beautiful to the naked eye.

Is it odd that they graded the one with off color and didn't grade the one that looked right?

Also, would it be worth my time to send the 66 back in to ANACS maybe...

Sending a PCGS "genuine" slab to ANACS in hopes of a grade would be a mistake. They say that the details of other company's grades are masked to avoid prejudice, but I wouldn't take that chance. If you do like the look of the coin and want it graded, remove it from the PCGS genuine holder and submit raw.

Did PCGS give you a code for the genuine coin (82~99). That will tell you what the problem was. I've also had nice looking coins rejected by PCGS ... altered surface (I still can't see it) and PVC. Let us know what the code is.

I lost my camera and scanning slabs is just not a good idea.

Where would I find the code on the slab?

The format of the numbers printed on the obverse will remain the same. From the left - the coin number followed by a period, the "no grade code" assigned (such as 92 for cleaned), a slash and a certification number. A list of no grade codes is provided below:

No Grade Description Printed Description Holdered
82 Filed Rims Yes Yes
83 Peeling Lamination No No
84 Holed and Plugged Yes Yes
90 Not Genuine No No
91 Questionable Color No Yes
92 Cleaning No Yes
93 Planchet Flaw No Yes
94 Altered Surfaces No Yes
95 Scratch / Rim Dent No Yes
97 Environmental Damage No Yes
98 Damage No Yes
99 PVC Residue No No

The reverse of the insert will be modified on Genuine coins to print "GENUINE NOT GRADABLE".

We will not net-grade coins and will not print any other grading information. The no grade code to the right of the coin number is what should be used to determine the problem that PCGS has identified. Other than what has been mentioned the labels will remain the same, i.e., same color, design, etc.

Mine is a 92, so cleaned. The coin is in perfect condition though - absolutely beautiful.

I would so not object to having a subtly cleaned coin in a collection.
