Hey again,
Just something that's really bothering me. Where did these black and gold $1 coins come from? They look magnificant. I can't find anything about them on the net, and my mates have never heard of them either. Here is an example from this forum...

Black-And-Gold-$1?

I'd really like to get ahold of one.

They are not black and gold. They are proof coins and the "black" is the reflective surface of the coin.

?

I don't understand... I get the coin is infact gold.

But the 'black' is the reflective surface, here I am confused. Why does it look black? Why aren't the roos and edge black aswell? If it is reflection, shouldn't it be brighter gold rather than shadow?

It all depends on how the shot is framed and how the lighting is set up for the shot, more often than not highly reflective surfaces appear black...have a look at this Kruggerand where I have set the lighting to capture both "the black surface" as well as the normal surface...I find that by doing it this way, it gives the coin a better contrast...

Likewise you can also by playing around with the lighting and take shots like this one where the centre appears darker than the outer ring of the coin...

there might not be any black and gold proof coins , but the 2000 ,2001,2002,2003,2004 royal australian mint proof sets all contain coloured coins , I dont collect proof sets but maybe another forum member can post pictures for you spd-dmn
