I've had this coin for about 10 years, never have been able to figure out if there was any significance to that mark. It's a 1819 halfcrown, by the way. First question, does anybody have any idea what this mark could be? Second question. I have another halfcrown, 1917, same type, about same value. I don't want to hold on to both, I'd rather swap one. Does this mark make it "special", the one I want to keep; or it's rather a detriment, and I better save the "whole" one? Opinions are welcome, knowledge will be appreciated. Thank you.
G'day, looks like a "chop mark". Some people regard these as mutilations, which devalue the coin. Others regard them as part of the narrative of a coin's history, and these people see them as an enhancement, or at least neutral. Peter in Oz
Thanks, Peter, for you response. Perhaps I should have placed this topic in a more general forum, it'd get more traffic. Even though the host coin is British, the question is not so. What do you think Mr. Moderators?
