I just bought two of these beautiful silver coins yesterday, a '44 and a '52, at an auction and the '44 has an "S" above the year, what does it mean? thank you

G'day,
"S" means that this coin was minted in San Francisco;
"D" for Denver;
these two mints made silver coins for Oz for a few years in WW2.
in the 1950s, some silver coins for Oz were made in the U.K.
