this large penny is 31mm diameter, is this a common coin? Commonwealth? comments appreciated, thanks

It is pretty common. In that grade it is worth about 20 to 30 cents.

G'day, my Renniks has gone missing, so I can't cite details.
Look at the reverse; inside the inner circle; above the date, is the mintmark "I", for India, specifically Bombay.
Your obverse shows a lot of circulation, but this coin remains an honest example of its type.
