Hi, today I found a dollar coin and have had difficulty finding information about it.

- It looks similar to this Barber coin, but it is gold, the face is in the opposite direction, and it is gold. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:B..._Obverse.png

- The opposite side shows branches, forming a circle around "1 Dollar" and 1853. Around the circumference on the coin it says, "United States of America"

The face side shows a number under the head. At first I thought it said 1906, but I believe it says 4906. Although it seems that 1906 would make more sense. So the coin is either an 1853 or 1906...

- ~ 1.4cm in diameter (quite small) and very thin

I'm not exactly sure how to post a picture, so when I figure that out, I will. Until then, I'd appreciate any information! Thanks!

An easy way of providing us pictures is to upload them to https://www.imageshack.us and then post the link in your post.

Sounds like a 1853 Liberty Head gold dollar. Is there a mint mark on the side with the branches (look just below where the branches meet at the bottom)? There may not be one, but if there is it will be either an "O", "C", or "D". If there is no mint mark or an "O" your coin is probably in the $200-300 range (but depends on condition). If it is a "C" or "D" it is worth $1500 or more.

I apologize for the low quality. I do not have my SLR with me.

gawd0wns, my coin looks very similar to the first link, although the stars do not form a complete circle. There is a number/date on the bottom, breaking the chain of stars. http://www.coinfacts.com/gold_dolla...d_dollar.htm

Hmm, that looks like a reproduction. The reverse (side with the branches) is the back of the Liberty Head dollar that I mentioned earlier. The obverse (side with the head) is that of a Liberty Head Quarter Eagle (2.5 dollar piece). I have no idea about the history of the coin you have other than it isn't a real US coin, and probably isn't worth much of anything unfortunately.
