I've recently gotten back into numismatics after being out of the hobby for a long time (since I was a kid in the late 80s). Besides a coin collection, I also had an interest in metal detecting. Now that I'm getting back into the hobby after moving to a beachside community which is a popular tourist destination (meaning that hopefully there will be some good finds!), I'm getting the itch to start trying my luck at metal detecting again!

I still have my old White's 4000-D (series 3) detector that I'm hoping still works. The problem I have is that I've lost the holder for the 6 AA batteries it needs for power. The connector that is intended to connect to the AA holder looks identical to the connector for a 9-volt battery.

Since 6 AA 1.5v AA batteries equal 9 volts, could I just use a regular 9 volt battery instead? It seems like a logical substitution and would save me some hassle getting a new holder, but I'm no expert on the subject so I figured I would check here first in case it risks doing something bad to my detector.

Thanks!

Depends if the batteries are wired in series or parallel. Series increases voltage, parallel increases amperage.

It would probably indicate something in the manual which you can find here:

http://whiteselectronics.com/info/manuals.html

EDIT: I briefly looked through it, and it doesn't indicate anything.. However, since the company is still in business, you may be able to call them and get more info.

I suspect that even if it did work then the 9volt battery would only last a short amount of time. Check the mha rating on the 9volt and compare it to the sum of the mha ratings of the AA's.
Radioshack may have a holder that fits but Whites would be your best bet just give them a call and they will help you.
