Ok, here's one for all you metallurgists...

The Lincoln Cents section of the 2010 Red Book says this:

Lincoln, Wheat Ears Reverse (1909-1958)
Variety 1 - Bronze (1909-1942) 0.950 Copper, 0.050 tin and zinc
Variety 1 - Bronze Resumed (1944-1958) 0.950 Copper, 0.050 tin and zinc

Lincoln, Memorial Reverse (1959 - Date)
Copper Alloy - (1959-1982) 0.950 Copper, 0.050 tin and zinc

My question is this, Why is the same composition referred to as Bronze for wheat cents and Copper Alloy for memorials? It appears they have the exact same composition and weight.

I don't know about the 2010 Red Book, but the 2009 says:

Lincoln, Memorial

1959-1962 .950 copper, .050 tin & zinc
1962-1982 .950 copper, .050 zinc
1982-date .992 zinc, .008 copper with a plating of pure copper, total content .975 zinc, .025 copper

The 2010 says the same thing as collect4fun's 2009 edition. But I also see what you are talking about The Duke. The problem is that you read the Copper Alloy part wrong. It only says tin and zinc for 1959-1962. Since you need Tin to make Bronze, you can't call a Copper-Zinc alloy Bronze. Therefore Copper alloy was a more accurate description for the coins, although the 1959-62 coins could still be called Bronze.

A 1982 Lincoln(last year of copper) does not have the same composition as a 1909 Lincoln. Obviously, everyone knows about the steel issues of 1943 and the shellcase bronze coins of 1944-47 but once the regular bronze composition was reintroduced, the quantity of tin was incrementally reduced to the point that it was removed entirely in 1962. At that point, you basically had a brass composition instead of bronze.

I see it now. I was only looking at the 1959-62.

Thanks
