Good Morning,

I just bid and won a 1866 Three Cent Nickel. I paid $12.50 for it but the one thing that I wanted to ask is they said it had a few dark spots on it. What are dark spots and do they hurt the coins value alot. Here is the link to the coin. Thanks for any opinions on this.

The dark spots wouldn't be a big issue, however, looking at the picture, possibly an old cleaning? Hopefully one of the more experienced members can chime in on this, but if I'm right, that may reduce the value a bit.

"Dark spots" isn't very specific, it could be anything from toning to corrosion pitting and those pics are too small be be certain.

I e-mailed the guy I bought it from and he said he bought it 10 years ago from a coin shop in annaoplis maryland and as far as he knows it has not been cleaned. They graded it Fine. I know it's not a big deal but I think I need to learn how to spot cleaned coins. LOL
