How would you grade this 1908 Quarter? Also, I've got a free submission to PCGS - Do you think that this coin would be graded by them considering the nicks on the rim (obverse) and the light scratch on the neck and face?

I would give it a f-15 to a vf 20. As for PCGS grading it I'm not for sure.

I would grade this coin at VF-20, it looks like it was harshly cleaned at one point. I would save the free submission for a better coin.

Wing detail says XF to me, and I dont know if its been harshly cleaned but it looks like it at least has some problems, but yeah this isn't a 'high enough' dollar coin to submit IMO.

Thanks for your replies. I know it is not a top money coin or anything. Without the problems, I think it would grade vf-35 or xf-40. I'm trying to put together a lower end registry set of Barber quarters and I would be content with it grading either vf or xf.

When I collect a series, I also like to get slabbed examples of all the grades. So that is why I was considering submitting this coin. I don't want to waste my free submission with a Genuine holder so I'll probably look for a different coin to submit.

I would concur with your VF35/EF40 assessment but the surfaces just look oddly dull. Does the coin look better in hand? With that thin scratch and the few black spots, I would be afraid that PCGS would be too eager to bring down the "Genuine" hammer on you because it is such a common coin. If it were one of the key dates, I am sure they would slab with a grade.
