I've had this 1921 Morgan for many years now. I purchased it from a dealer back in 1990 at a local coin show for $3.00 according to my records. At the time I didn't have a Morgan and was just starting my collection. The dealer had it graded at XF. Your thoughts on it would be appreciated.

AU details, cleaned (hairlines on obverse)
I do not see hairlines on the reverse but that doesn't mean that cannot be seen in-hand. Then again, it is possible that only the obverse was cleaned and the rev is fine.

biokemist6, thanks for the feedback. Please tell me the tell-tell signs that indicate this coin has been cleaned?

Thanks, Clinton

From the photos, it is pretty obvious- hairlines across the neck, cheek, and behind the head. Hairlines are caused by friction on the surface of the coin, from wiping or some other mechanical action.

I appreciate your input. The problem for me - as a newbie - I looked at those and saw them as wear & tear.

So would I nod2003 but I was actually thinking of submitting this to NGC for grading... but if it has been cleaned will they even bother grading it? Again, probably a noob question but I'm just getting my wheels back under me in the hobby.

It could be the picture but I'm seeing wear on the lower part of the wreath, that could be why the dealer graded it at EF. Signs of an old cleaning, but the coin looks like it's starting to re-tone. Overall I think it would grade at AU-53.

They would still grade it, but they would put cleaned on the label.

It might cost more to have it graded than it's worth. I'd just keep it and appreciate it as it is. Nice buy for 3 bucks!

I believe its been cleaned also. Anytime you see lines like that in one direction all over the coin its a pretty good indicator it has been harshly cleaned and not a sign of true wear, those lines would not be all going in the same direction because they would have happened at different times throughout the coins life

Thanks everyone for the valuable input. It's very much appreciated. I think I'll stick with hippiebrian's idea and just enjoy it for what it is and not worry about the NGC grading. I have to say I'm a bit disappointed as I didn't know what I was buying at the time but I take comfort in that it was only $3.

That is also a good point Bryan1315 on the lines all going the same way - didn't even dawn on me until you posted that. Thanks for pointing out the obvious - clearly I missed it. :-)

Another good learning experience, thanks everyone.

My first thought on this coin when I saw it was cleaned. 3 dollars for a morgan is always a excellent buy. even cleaned you could get 16 bucks for it these days. Man I sometimes wish I was old enough to buy silver in the early 90s. I am sure you thought you were paying to much at the time to didnt you?

I actually thought I was getting a decent deal at $3 daviscfad. But I was just starting out back then, had even less of a clue than I do now and was wanting to fill-the-need of having a Morgan in the collection. I think the eagerness to have the coin blinded me to the cleaning. When I bought this I was... 21 I think... so yeah, I'll chalk it up to being a know-it-all-twenty-one-year-old :-)
