What would cause a nickel to look like this. It doesn't appear to be scorched like it was heated but it looks like the metal flowed to the edge.

Acid, maybe. I have a couple of Lincoln Cents that look like this.

Pictures of the whole coin would be helpful, but I think this is a case of post mint damage.

I guess acid could do it, and I agree it is post mint. The strike image is below the damage. To me it is odd that the metal seems to flow outward, in all directions. Kinda like it was spun on it's rim, but the rim itself doesn't have that type of buildup. Although Nickels are not true "nickel", they are still harder than other alloy coins.

Here is the whole coin though.
