My son is fairly new to collecting. Not long ago, I picked up a handful of very worn old coins for a dollar at our local coin shop. It was fun for him to try to identify them.

Included were a few super-smooth Shield nickels. For fun, we put them in vinegar to see if we could raise the dates. One did turn out to be an 1867, another is still soaking, and the others just stayed smooth.

Anyway, we thought it would be fun to release one of the smoothies "back into the wild." So today we went to McDonald's to get a coffee for my wife, and we paid with change--including one of the Shield nickels. We were scared the girl wouldn't take it because it looked so much like a slug. You should have seen how excited he was when she dropped all the nickels into the register.

Anyway, there is now at least one Shield nickel in circulation. We are hoping that whoever finds it is as excited to find it as we were to spend it.

This thread is about my finding an 1867 No-rays in a CoinStar reject tray!

That was actually the inspiration for actually putting one into circulation.

Good job. I have thought about doing that, but I can't let go. I've never even sold a coin.

It is awesome that a Shield nickel has been deliberately returned to
circulation , rather than just (accidentally?!) dumped into a CoinStar
machine and subsequently found by a passer-by (myself).

I'm very happy if I inspired you to return it to circulation!

I've made a point of spending a certain amount of the BU coins that I
get from the Denver Mint. For every $100 of Territorial Quarters I've
bought there, I've made sure to spend at least $10 worth of them in
retail transactions. Restaurants and stores are always happy to get
lots of Quarters in their cash drawer, and this way I know that some
people will be able to get Territorial Quarters in their change!
(with a few exceptions, such as the young McDonald's cashier who
bought all of the BU American Samoa-D's out of the drawer that I
paid him with! )

Last Feb. 12th, in honor of Lincoln's 200th birthday, I put a coin
tube of common-date Wheat Cents in my pocket and spent them during all
of my transactions that day. I managed to spend 43 of them, and no
cashier hoarded them (at least not in front of me!).

The very 'essence' (or 'roots') of this pastime is the joy of finding
a collectible coin from circulation. I have a PCGS MS65 1938-D Buffalo
Nickel (with beautiful gold toning), but I'm actually prouder of the
F-15 1938-D Buffalo nickel that I found in a circulated roll last May!
(shown in that other thread)

38-D Buff vs. 38-D Buff:
PCGS MS-65, CAC, uniform gold toning = $38 cash
Raw F-15, almost full horn = 5¢

I tried to spend a Shield nickel a couple years ago. Couldn't get the cashier to accept it. I would have put it in a vending machine, but they won't take them either, too small in diameter and they reject them.

We put it in a stack of nickels to try to hide it. We figured once it got into the register, it would get pulled out without being looked at and make it into someone else's hand.

We felt like we were trying to get away with something.
