I'm curious. I know how I have built my collection, but how have you built, or how are you building your collection? Do you allocate a set number of dollars each month from your paycheck?

That's been my routine. I set aside a bit from each paycheck and once I have enough to make it worthwhile, I go shopping!

I prefer the "Robin Hood" method........look at every dealers table, buy what they miss as variety's etc.......sell them back to them attributed......makes the world go round cause now I spend more on coins......HoHoHo

My method is more like that. I am self employed, and my collection must be self sufficient. I have to sell...in order to buy. This has meant buying screamin' deals....just because they were deals rather than what I may actually want to own, then selling it to finance that which I do want to keep. I started with a just under 2 thousand dollars a year ago, and my collection has grown to include 22 gold coins...none of which are tenth ouncers, about 30 pounds of silver, and a high grade (EF-AU) Liberty nickel set that lacks just the 85 and 12-S. I have little interest in copper, but sometimes buy those coins as well. Chancellor Sutler

I love mods who have a true sense of humor! And this forum has a lot of clow - er, mods with excellent, penetrating, entertaining, intelligent sense of humor. (Whew - almost didn't turn that one around ...)
How do I finance my collecting habits? I collect cheap coins. I fill holes in albums; I don't hold out for uncirculated examples; I know that I'll never own a 1916-D nor a 1909-S VDB (although my heart is still going pitter-patter months after the night I held both in my hot little hands at a local coin club meeting!); I go with the flow of coins (and tokens) that come my way; I enjoy what I have for what they are: NOT an investment, but a collection of history, art/sculpture, history, and the foibles of humankind. And whenever possible, I trade instead of buy.

I collect what I can afford. As my income changes, so do my collecting habits. Also, I sell things I no longer want to buy things I do want. Hopefully the things I purchased in the past have gone up in value so that when I sell them today I have made at least a bit of a profit to put into today's purchases. The good (and also bad) thing is that I collect a variety of things...baseball cards, comic books, stamps, coins (of course), etc. so I'm always trying to figure out what is expendable to finance the latest "need"

Quote: I know that I'll never own a 1916-D, nor a 1909-S VDB 1916-D's aren't that hard to come by: I got an XF-45 1916-D in a Wheat cent bag, and I found a VG-8 1916-D in circulation about 15 years ago. The XF-45 1916-D is a Cent, and the VG-8 1916-D is a Buffalo nickel. So, let me repeat: 1916-D's aren't that hard to come by... unless you're talking about a Dime! and the 1916-D Walking Liberty, in any grade above VG!

Heat, lights, water, and regular meals are WAY over rated.

Most of my collecting comes from circulation finds!

I buy low and sell high. We call it cherry-pickin' and it's kept me going for years now. When I find a better coin, I replace the old one and sell it for more than I paid for it ... frequently, many times more. It takes some patience and isn't for those who want rapid accumulation of pieces.

Quote: I collect cheap coins. I fill holes in albums; I don't hold out for uncirculated examples Sounds a lot like me. Quote: I know that I'll never own a 1916-D nor a 1909-S VDB I might not ever get the former, but I will most definitely get the latter! One day. Quote: Most of my collecting comes from circulation finds! Same here. Of course I have had to make purchases to complete my albums, but the heart of my collection comes from circulation.

Quote: "How do you finance your collection?" You don't have to 'finance' circulation finds, that's the beauty of it! Circulation finds also give you a sense of satisfaction in your accomplishment that you can't get just by buying coins. Anyone in Denver can go to the Mint and trade their notes for the current Quarters. That's not an 'accomplishment', that's an exchange of money. The two 'rolls' of 2009-D Quarters that I'm proud of are the 80 of them that I saved from my change (and I haven't even found a Northern Mariana Islands in my change yet!). I estimate that I received over 2000 Quarters total in my change this year, and kept less than 100 of them (the 80 2009-D's, some MS State Quarters, a few pre-'65 Silver Quarters and a 1971-S Proof).
