Is there a real difference in quality between the early 50's proof and high grade MS coins? I am putting together a set of dimes and want to include proofs but have heard that some dealers will pass off uncirculated coins for proof. These early proofs lack the deep mirror finish that we are used to from the 60's on. Is there any other way to tell the difference between a nice uncirculated 1950 dime and one that actually came from a proof set?

It might just be me but working on my dime dansco I could easily tell the difference between proofs from the 50's no problem.

Proofs can become "impaired" to the extent they might look uncirculated. I certainly have seen some that are still in the cellophane.

However, any PR65 or higher should have mirrored fields. It might not be cameo or deep cameo, but if you can't spot it from a few feet away, you shouldn't waste your money on it.

I suppose you could polish a MS coin, but then you should see all kinds of hairlines, etc. on the surfaces.

timer,

There is no comparison ... kind of like apples and oranges. They are created using totally different processes.

Proof dies and planchets used for proofs get special preparation. The polished planchets are struck several times to insure a high contrast between fields and devices. Dies and planchets used for circulation strikes don't get these additional steps and the result is less contrast.

The proofs from the 50's and 60's (for the most part) don't have the "cameo devices" you see on modern proofs, but they indeed have mirrored fields. If you are concerned about getting an MS circulation strike instead of a proof, check photos of proofs to learn the die markers. The dies were different than those used for circulation strikes.

Thanks for the info.... does anyone know of any specific die markers that I should look for in the proof dimes from 1950 - 1956?...or a web site where I might find this information?

When dealing with pre-1973 proofs there is often NO contrast between the fields and the devices. In fact the devices have the same mirror finish that the fields have.
