When I was young the five cent coins of Canada had more interest because of the varieties of shape and colour. No other coin offered so many different types. Chrome plated, Tombac, multi sided and round. Victory nickels, 1951 commemorative. I would actually find all of these in change.

I like the 50 cents, particularly the larger silver ones with the Kruger Grey designed coat of arms.

My parents got this one in "change" when they lived in Ontario in the early '70's. It's the only 50¢ they kept; I think even back then they weren't commonly found in circulation.

I'm more interested in pre-Confederation coinage, especially the coins of Newfoundland.I have even got the rare Magdalen Islands 1d. token, which some people would place in a Newfoundland collection,as the islands were part of Newfoundland in 1815.Since 1825,the Magdalen Islands have been part of Quebec (Lower Canada prior to 1867).They have a name in Quebecois, which I don't know.Has anyone thought about raising the Newfoundland flag on the Magdalen Islands, just to poke fun at the Quebecois?

I've been asking a similar question, Pattiewhack . It's been on my wantlist for a while now. Every time I look for one on ebay, it's either way too pricey (for the current budget allocated to it), worn so flat you can't read most of the legend, or they won't post to "unconfirmed addresses" (i.e. to Australia). Or I get sniped.

If you're searching Google or ebay, search for both "Magdalen Island" and "Magdalen Islands" - I've seen them listed as both.

Pattiewhack & Sap,the Magdalen Islands 1d. token is very rare.I've only ever seen one example - the one I have in my collection.I picked it up as payment for work done,as I work part-time for a coin dealer here in Wellington.Unfortunately for you,my piece is NOT for sale, but fortunately for me,I'm keeping it,as it is the only numismatic item from the islands. That is,if no-one has ever seen a Canadian postal note issued at the post office on the Magdalen Islands.Chances of seeing one is very remote, however.

I likwe the centenial issues of 1967, a refreshing difference from the similar coins of so many years. APart from that, I agree with the other comments- old coins are nice, especially in super conditions, pre confederation is lovely and interesting, and some of the modern issues , especially the nickels and quarters I really like. I do like them to be circulating commemoratives, too.

I have no particular favorite but like them all. I think the designs are very unique and wish the US Mint would learn a little from the Canadian Mint.
