I was going through rolls today and pulled both of these out at the same time, otherwise I wouldn't have noticed it. The mint mark on the top one is about half the size of the bottom one. The bottom one is normal sized (I compared it to others). What gives? Do MMs vary in size?

Both LMCs are from the same picture so there is no size distortion.

Thank You,

Some years do have mintmarks of different sizes but 1978 is not one of them. Before 1990, the mintmark was applied individually to each die with a hand punch. The apparent difference in size is explained by the fact that the top coin had the mintmark punched into the die more lightly than the bottom coin.
