Sorry to intrude on this thread, but I have an Australian penny that's exactly like the one on bm's avatar. The only difference is that mine is a '42 and in better condition. Would that be worth anything? Edited by Metalman 05/28/2006 4:15 pm

There are two types of the 1942 penny, one strucked in Perth and the other in Bombay. Without looking at a good scan of the coin it is not possible to tell you which is the one you have or let you know what I think it is worth.
Catalogue values for the Perth penny can vary from 50 cents to $450.00 and the Bombay one can vary from 50 cents to $225.00.
BTW welcome to the Community.

Is this a good image? And, thanks for the welcome. :) EDIT: The picture isn't really clear, so I'll tell the details. On the front (bottom left of the kangaroo) is a 7-pointed star, and on the right of the kangaroo is a "kg". There's also a period before and after the word "penny" (although I don't think that matter, does it? You'll have to excuse me, I'm a novice at this, ;P). On the back (around the head) are the words, "GEORGIVS VI D:G:BR:OMN:REX F:D:IND:IMP."

The one pictured was strucked at the Perth Mint (look at the dot after the letter "Y" in the word Penny). Both the obverse and reverse of the coin shows wear to the high points and IMHO will at best only make the VF grade. In this grade the catalogue value (Maccas) is only $10.00.

Welcome to the forum AKAK.
Hope you enjoy your stay with us.
You do not specify what country you are from. Do you collect Australian coins.
My avatar is the 1947 Penny but pennies have been around and used for about 50 years. Different mint produced them so depending on the year, the mint and condition values could vary greatly ( from 50 cents to many thousands of dollars).

Wow, that's a pretty big jump from 100's of dollars (I'm assuming VF is "Very Fine condition?"), I didn't realize only a slight degradation in the condition affected so much. Doesn't matter t'me anyways, because I thought was only worth its face value, :P.

I stand corrected metalman/AKAK...the two dots as per what is on this coin (before and after the word penny)signifies this coin is from the Bombay Mint. Did not see the very small letter "I".....

Neither did I, Lim. I actually noticed it last night while I was looking at my coin. I saw it, and thought, "Whoops, did that matter?"
Does that affect the price?

Welcome to the forum AKAK. Yes, unfortunately at VF the Bombay coin is worth less, only $7 (Australian Dollars). Steve
