Hello,

I was reading in one of my August Coin World magazines about people getting Lincoln Cent Rolls postally canceled. What does this mean and what is the significance?

Thanks,
Rich

not sure if this is the same thing but a few years ago you could get rolls with a stamp on the rolls and the stamps were canceled out. If it was Lincoln on the coins the stamp would have Lincoln on it. Not sure this is what they are referring to or not but I do remember seeing these type of rolls before. here is an example of rolls that have the commemorative stamps on the rolls http://cgi.ebay.com/09-PROFESSION-L...-D_W0QQitemZ280398847619QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCoins_US_Individual?hash=item414912de83

Snitchard,

The Lincoln Cent rolls they are referring to are rolls that are released by the U. S. Mint at a special release ceremony.

There were four of these releases held in 2009 for the Lincoln Cent.

Those in attendance were able to buy rolls of coins at face value.

They then took them to the local Post Office and had postage stamps placed on the rolls, and them had the postal clerk cancel the stamps.

By doing this the roll is sealed and cannot be opened without damaging the stamp or the cancellation.

This gives that roll provenance as to being a roll that DEFINATLY came from that release ceremony, in the release city, on the release day.

There are many, many collectors who like these types of rolls, myself included.

At the fourth release held outside the US Capitol in Washington DC, in November, for the Presidential Cent, there was a guy who got into the US Capitol Building Post Office and had 16 rolls canceled there.

ebay bidders raised the price to well over $100 per roll for these particular ones because there are so few of them.

Other rolls were stamped and cancelled at Union Station and a few other places in DC.
