Hello all,
This is my 1st post.
I have inherited two collections of coins, one from my Dad and one from my late father-in-law, I am gradually going through them as I'm not a collector I would like to get the professionals advice please

Here I have a coin or medal of French origin 1830, its gold in colour (although I dont think its gold)its very large and heavy.

The writing on the front reads:
HIST. DE LA REVOLUTION. E L'EMPIRE
DE LA RESTAURATION
ET DE LA MON. DE 1830
PUBLIE PAR PURRAT FRERES A PARIS.

on the rear:
MONTAGNY FECIT

on the side:
CUIVRE With a symbol of some sort?

Could this coin be real? a re-strike? or a fake?
Where would I be able to get an approximate valuation for such a coin / medal?

on the rear:
MONTAGNY FECIT
"Montagny made this" and the date is right for this man who was one of a family of medfallists. He was notable for a series of Napoleonic medals possibly for "Monnaie de Paris"
on the side:
CUIVRE With a symbol of some sort?
Cuivre is the French for copper and the symbol is likely to be that of a cornucopia. As to the medal itself, I hope someone else here can help you.

"Cuivre" is "copper" in French, so that would be the metal. I'll be interested in hearing the history behind it ... very nice.

Hello, Smithersjones,
Your medal is almost certain to be real as counterfeiters concentrate on popular material, usually coins. Based on my previous experience with similar medals and the note above which shows a nicer specimen with its original box starting at 100 euros ($150), I would suggest it would bring about $50 ($35-$75)on ebay. Hope this helps. This is my first post - hello to all!

I have been able to get some more information on this medal, here goes.

Translation Invalides Napoleon's body:

At bottom right, the warship that carried the ashes of Napoleon STE. Helene, left the church of the Invalides. Above, an eagle which is placed the emperor surrounded by rays. Excerpted smooth.

"History of the Revolution; and of the restoration of the Empire and the Monarchy, from 1830"
"Produced (published) by the Purrat Brothers at Paris"

Engraver: Montagny
Mm 53 - AE gilt
Struck in 1845-1860 (COPPER and pointing hand on The Edge)
