Does anyone know what the difference is between Press #1 & Press #2 in regards to the new $1 coins from the RAM visitor's centre? There are quite a few for sale on ebay at the moment. Cheers Simon.

this is all I can find about it, I am guessing they have 2 visitors presses

The first visitor to the Mint was allowed to operate the press creating the first coin of the year. A Melbourne coin collector Bruce Mansfield had the honor, and brought home a special memory and collectible coin. The following 99 visitors were also allowed to strike a coin and took home a special prize.

On December 31st, beginning at 3 PM, visitors to the Royal Australian Mint's facility in the Australian Capital Territory will each be given a raffle ticket. At 4 PM, one lucky ticket will be drawn. The holder of that ticket will have the distinction of being the last person in the world to strike an Australian $1 coin on the visitor press in 2009.

Then, on the next morning, January 1st, the Mint will open its doors at 10AM. Among those initial visitors, one person will be the first in 2010 to strike a $1 coin on the visitor press. Additionally, the first 100 individuals to strike coins on that day will also receive prizes.

The Royal Australian Mint offers free tours of its facility all but two days a year. While the factory is in operation, visitors can see staff and the automated robots creating the circulating coinage for the country. Then, take a few moments to go through the museum and gallery where where coins from the early days of Australia are featured. Finally, all interested individuals can take a crack at striking their very own coin to see how the process of creating coinage really occurs.

There are two gallery presses at the Royal Australian Mint. The two differences are:
  • The reeding on both coins is different. This is due to the positioning of the collar. Obviously while the collar remains in the same position they will remain different. However, if moved this minor difference between the presses becomes irrelevant.
  • The 2nd gallery press has some an oil(?) issue with the die. The legend is not as crisp as press 1. Again, unless the die is at fault, the difference will disappear if the die is cleaned. It may also be a poorly crafted/maintained die. Time will tell
