at the local coin show today, I was looking at this guys SLQs and he had a 1921 listed as VG for $150, so I called the guy over and asked if I could see it, I looked at it for about 20 minutes and he said he would take $130 for it. So I told him I would think about it and noticed in his other case he had a PCGS 1921 SLQ in G06 for $155 which looks the same as his raw one that he has in VG. So I told the guy that I would be back tomorrow to make my decision and as I got home I notice $130 was bid price, so which one do you think I should buy, the PCGS G06 for $155(he might come down on the price a little) or the raw so called VG for $130, or should I just save my money. I'm open for opinions

so you are saying he had one marked VG and one in a PCGS G-06 but the one marked VG looks to be in the same condition as the one slabbed by PCGS as a lower grade? If I am reading this correct I would probably go for the one slabbed unless you are confident the other coin doesn't have problems and is not counterfeit. This is if he comes down to the same price as he quoted you for the raw one.

My suggestion is that you take a little time and learn some grading standards for the series, just because the slab says G-06 does not mean it is and just because the raw coin says VF does not mean it is that either. you determine the grade and know what you're buying. I can't stress this enough, TPG's are not always dependable, and raw coins are not always a bad choice. it should not take to long to get an idea of what that particular coin and year should exhibit for the grades they are given at the shop, see if they match the grades that you would give them and then if the value is there before you buy.

i printed out a photo grade sheet on the SLQs and I am taking it with me, I have also printed out a price guide too, I really think that I should buy the raw one cause it is definitely genuine and if I buy it for $130, it will for sure grade G but there could be a good chance that the dealer is right and it grade VG which would add close to $80 to the value, but I will have to wait till tomorrow to decide which one I want and I will post pics of the one I choose for yall to see

Quote: you determine the grade and know what you're buying. x 1000! Only you can determine which one you'll be happy with (and not regret the purchase).

I agree, it depends on your preference and your grades of each SLQ. That seems like a good price, you should definitely go for it.

no, the PCGS was $155 and he would only go to $150, and the raw one he listed as $150 and went $120. I would have loved the PCGS if he would have went down to even $135, now I need to find an AG 23-s for $200 (LOL in my dream I know)

Oh, I still might of bought if I had seen it, still a pretty good price in my opinion. One question though, is the date on the SLQ strong?

no, the 1 is the only number that is strong but under a magnify glass with a little help from a LED light you can see the 2

That's what I figured, most pre-25 dates seem to be weak, especially the 1921.
