Here's another QEII, a bit smaller note, (P-28b) $1 from Bermuda:

I haven't really got into notes, but bought these off a friend whose lost his job and found them in a box lot of stamps he bought and needed some cash. I gave him $30 (NZD = £15.25)




That stainette only appears on the bottom note and is dry

It is a packet of 10 x £1 Series D notes (British - English) and they have a wrapper. What surprised me is I thought they would likely be early 1980s remainders from just before the coin came out - but they are earlier in fact - B83C from Banknote yearbook and Pick B337 being the earliest version of these notes (1978 Page signature).

They are also sequential and practically uncirculated (Some paper ruffling on the top and bottom notes). The sleeve is in perfect condition. UO1 869672 TO 869681 and all 10 of the pounds are there!

I agree that is why I offered him $30 instead of $20. He may be cheap with the notes and coins, but have taken a fair few hundreds of dollars off me in stamp sales!

NumisRob, thanks for info and it makes total sense, back in 1978 ATMs must have been very new (NZ got them in 1983 and it only dispensed $20 notes) and getting a single pound out would seem silly - yet if you had got out £10 and it came as a £10 note back in 1978/79 that would have been inconvenient as I imagine then that the average cash purchase was something like a pint, a train ticket or a trip to the chippy and such small transactions would not make shopkeepers happy to break a tenner, a single pound or two made more sense. Of course as the 80s wore on inflation made that tenner less of a "big note". Now you see this when you buy a chewing gum or a can of coke with a $50 or a $100 note (Usually they will think its forged or at least say "don't you have anything smaller".

I can remember some bad 80s movie in which a woman is an alien in disguise and pays for her groceries with a $1000 note and the checkout girl says "Don't you have anything smaller" and she produces this like miniature sized note thing!

I guess now that £10 note would have had the buying power of a 50 now. Plus it explains why the bundle starts with a serial number 2 note rather than 0 or 1. Some poor woman had to sit in a room assembling bundles of notes and wrapping them for the ATM!
