Local emergency issue from a village in north-eastern France, WW1. Uniface, the reverse is blank. Funny because of two things that actually both puzzle me:

1. the snake leather underprint
2. the denomination. I think they meant "0,50 Franc" or "50 centimes". Half of a centime wouldn't possibly be worth the effort of printing the note, let alone designing it.

As some of you might know by now, I'm specializing in Spitsbergen. Yesterday one of the biggest auctions of the year took place and I dibs-ed a few nice pieces.

SNSK 10 Kroner 1973 with the 2 red stamps. It's about the lower note, which should be a pretty easy one but I still lacked it. The stamps were added as the 100 Kroner note from the same year was also yellow and it appared to be confusing to the miners.



SNSK 500 Kroner 1978. Almost the highest denom of all. The 1000 will come one day.



Then a 1 Krone 1947-48 with a story. There are enough notes te be found from both the previous (46-47) and the following (48-49) season. ALL known notes from the 46-47 season (in any denomination) show a striking error: The word Spitsbergen is written with a double I "Spiitsbergen". In all of the 48-49 notes, the error has been corrected. Which brings up the question: How about 47-48? Notes from the 47-48 season are somehow extremely hard to come by. This is actually the first one I see so I HAD to have it. The answer: In 47-48 the double I was also corrected.



And the best one of all: a 50 Øre 1925-26. Mid-20s are VERY difficult in any denom. Here we have an issued note in a superb (AU) condition. Very Rare (in this case that translates to 4 copies known worldwide) so I'm VERY happy with this one.



This propels my Spitsbergen collection from 95 to 99 notes. Let's look at a real corker for the 100 milestone!

I like the old-world look of these Rock of Gibraltar notes. I picked up the last 'c' version:


(It is in an old huge PCGS holder designed for a horse blanket so I often overlook it).

Two new entries from Uzbekistan situated in Central Asia. The two highest denominations complete a set of 6 notes themed on the Great Silk Road, albeit the 200,000 So'm issue is still to come in 2024.

The 50,000 So'm note shows the mausoleum of Abu Iso Termiziy, an Islamic writer of religious texts in Termez on the front and the Buddhist Fayaz-Tepa monastery near Termez on the back.
The 100,000 So'm note shows the historic city center of Ichan Qal'a from Khiva, a World Heritage Site since 1990. The back pictures the ancient mud fortress of Angkaqal`a in Khorezm, about 70 km from Urgench.
