-Thanks! Most nations use colourful designs on their currency including Canada. I started out on my own nation's currency but branched into world notes since most lower denominations are fairly inexpensive in UNC. This makes them hard to resist.

Continuing on Bas S Warwick's theme, the $10 below is the first paper note the Government of Hong Kong produced since the QEII notes they put out in the 1960's:

It's colourful but small format & rather abstract design. The same design was then issued in polymer & one sees about 5 to 1 listings for the polymer versions. In comparison, below is a $10 from 1983 & from the Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation which is quite large and very attractive in hand:

I paid about $3.00 for the first 2002 government paper $10 & about $7.50 for the much larger chartered banknote. Later, I won an earlier (& tougher) date from the Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation from an auction for about $5.00 & this note is serious eye candy!

My point is- you can pick them up for next to nothing in circulated grades (not that I would recommend this but many do). Yet in UNC they're also fairly inexpensive but the colours show even better & for me that's the pay off (plus I know I or someone I gift them to) can unload them easily.

And there would be no way I could get an UNC 40 year old note from my country for so incredibly cheap. Even if a collector friend was kind enough to part with an AU Birds $10 for $20 (or $25) that would be an amazing deal (but a super common Canadian note). It would be much harder to part with as so many Canadians have hoarded AU & circulated notes. To buy one here, in Canada, I would have to pay 13% tax on top of the LCS's price & I would definitely be much smarter to get an UNC even though it won't appreciate much.

Here's one of my first purchases from Iran:
Latest-Banknotes-Acquisition.-List-Them-Here.
(20 Rial less than $5.00 in UNC)

I got a few others b/c their designs are pretty old-school. Then I saw this one:

This was a short-lived overprint of the first one I bought when the Islamic Republic overthrew the Shaw government. It's like tracking history & has to be one of the most dramatic overprints I have seen. The one above was slightly more but well worth it IMO.

Some stunning notes being displayed. Thanks everyone

A couple of oldies here from 1980, which I was reminded of as my son gifted me 2 well worn examples from his working life in China around 10+ years ago. These are my UNC versions.
