Hello,
I love coin shows and I never want to leave empty handed and because of that I have made a few mistakes and have definitely wasted money in the process. So, as a 15 month old coin collector is it OK to leave a show empty handed? I always feel like a kid in a toy store.
Also what would you consider as having overpaid for a coin $.50 $1.00 $5.00. I ask because based on my new buying strategy it appears that some "deals" I thought I got were actually a little high.
Thanks, Rich

As I told you in your pricing topic, I do not think there is any shame in leaving empty handed. It is better to have something that fits your collection than something you might regret.
In my opinion, patience is very important. I was a lot less patient when I first starting buying coins. There are some coins in my collection that I could have done better with, but I won't upgrade because of the sentimental attachment. I am now the kind of person that would hold out for what fits, rather than just getting something to fill the hole.

I try to satisfy my "need" to buy something by looking through Lincoln Memorial cents to find high quality ones at very low cost. But alas, Lady Liberty on the Standing Liberty quarters and Walking halves will start shouting my name and demand to be purchased. If I didn't know any better, I'd swear she is singing the Siren Song. Yes, it is okay to leave empty handed.

I have to disagree.....it is NOT okay to leave empty handed at ALL ! ... If you're going to exhibit this term I hear so often called "self-control" while attending coin shows, then you're just not far enough along in the hobby. You see....one must project a serious classic textbook definition of...."Obsessive Compulsive Disorder". And until you've reached the point where you simply cannot attend a numismatic event without buying SOMETHING, then you've got a lot of work yet still to do in furthering and feeding you're interest in this hobby. So.....run out there and buy... buy... buy, like a thirsting desert-stranded man who just discovered a lake of fresh water my friend !!(K...there's my humor for the day ! LoL.....yeah....buy smart and be patient.....and you'll be half better than most of the people in this hobby ! Ha Ha)

This is really, really odd. I have an aquaintance, not really a friend, sort of. Just someone I've met at flea markets and coin shows over many, many years. His name is Rich also. What is odd is I've never, ever seen him buy anything. I mean nothing at all. He always walks around with his hands in his pockets, looks at everything, asks people how much this or that is, what did you buy, etc and never buys anything. I've seen him at coin shows a real lot and he does the same there all the time. We have 4 coin shows around here every Month and I've seen him at least at 2 of them every Month. I've even asked some dealers I know if they've noticed him and usually they all say yes, the guy that walks around with his hands in his pockets and never buys anything. I know your not him since he told me he has been coin collecting for about 50 years and according to your statement, your only 15 Months Old. I am curious though. Just how does a 15 Month Old coin collector, who takes you to those shows? At that age I hope you don't drive.

Quote: So, as a 15 month old coin collector Previous reply was a joke I hope you know. We do have a lot of sensitive people around. As to your actual question. Never get caught up in that buying frenzy stuff. That was true about that guy that just looks, looks, looks. You could really find you could learn a lot by looking, asking questions, talking to dealers and customers than buying coins. I've left coin shows many, many times without buying something. I know it's not easy, but then it's my money so I'll spend it when I want on what I want.

Well, it depends who you are. For the investor, $ 0.50 is overpaid, for the true collector, there is not such thing. Don't be depressed, I bring something from every coin show and next week scratch my head in disbelieve:
"Why did I buy that?"
