I pulled this 1862 British Penny out of a junk box a few days ago since is is not the easiest of dates to find and it is a decent grade considering the details. But the intentional damage certainly affects grade and value. In cases, such as my coin, how much would the overall grade and value be lowered? With this in mind, what kind of net grade would you give my penny? Thanks!

The mark is going to effect the grade and value somewhat. Luckily the marks aren't very deep and don't seem to effect the details on the coin. They also appear to be old marks that have had time to tone with the rest of the coin. I would grade this coin at VF-30 unmarked and VF-25 marked.

echizento- thanks for the input. I'm kind of surprised that it would not have been VF details, but the scratches result in it being about a net VG. I mean, the scratches are quite obviously deliberate. That raises the question whether unintentional damage or deliberate vandalism affect grade more.

So would most of you find that a coin with such vandalism is reduced to being a "filler," wich would have to be upgraded later, or is it considered in a sense negligible enough as to not detract from the "collectability" of a coin?

lafaa123- Without the scratches this coin would be worth about $15, but it should be noted that many 19th century British pennies are under-valued in that they are rather difficult to find in the US in better grades.

When putting together circulated sets, I accept that some coins may have some damage, particularly those coins that are more difficult to obtain. Rationale being that the scarcer undamaged coins have probably already found a home. I would have no problem having a coin such as this in my collection, the damage is old and has toned well with the rest of the coin, it doesn't look too bad. If a better example shows up later then good, but I wouldn't be going out of my way to look for one.
