it's not a Cud, more likely PMD,post minting damage, something after minting..

I'm thinking in the line of rim Cuds but I've never seen them spread out like this.If it was just one I'd definitely say Rim Cud.

Looks to me like the tops of letters! Could it be something crazy like a die clash from a misaligned die?

Could you show the whole coin? Those marks look indented so they could not possibly be rim Cuds. If they are indented marks, almost certainly PMD.

If the defects are incuse, then they're probably light impressions from the letters on the reverse of another cent. Post-strike damage, in other words.

That's weird,when I first looked at the photos the marks looked raised. Now,at the suggestion they might be incuse, I see them that way. I have seen optical illusions like that, as you stare at them they change back and forth from raised to sunken. You are probably right Mike but I would have never thought of it because I was seeing them as raised! WEIRD!

amazing how the closeups changed the whole perception

No, they are incuse marks. Look at the first close-up in the second post- you can see the rim mashed into the field.
