Here's an auction for a 1925 Canada 5 cent piece graded VG 10 by ICCS. That's a nice coin for any collection, but this seller seems to think that the mistake by ICCS of a typo signifying the coin as one cent instead of five cents warrants making this approximately $80 coin a $900 dollar one. I've had this on my watch list for a few months as it goes unsold and gets relisted.

Quote:
BUT ICCS MADE A HUGE MISTAKE BY LABELLING THIS COIN AS ONE CENT_PLEASE SEE PICTURE AND BE AMAZED!!

A VERY VERY RARE OCCASION THAT ICCS TEAM OF EXPERTS CAN MAKE SUCH AN ERROR_AMAZING THAT DESPITE BEING PASSED THROUGH SO MANY HIGHLY SKILLED EXPERTS AND SOPHISTICATED EQUIPMENTS,CAMERAS,SCANNING ETC....THE COIN WENT OUT AS ONE CENT CERTIFIED COIN THOUGH IT IS 1925 FIVE CENT COIN.

Personally, I would be turned off by the mistake and would be tempted to have it reslabbed. Given two problem free coins with the same grade at the same price, I would choose the one without the mistake. Is there anyone on the forum that would pay any kind of a premium for this? I know nobody is going to pay more than ten times the value, so this optimistic seller is out of luck.

I don't see anything to indicate anything on the label is correct. How do we know the grade is even right? It may not be a typo, could be 2 labels completely switched right?

That's a good point. The photo's not good enough to be certain, but the grade looks correct, but there is no assurance, as you said, that the label is the correct label from ICCS. Anyone have a 1925 cent in VG 10 indicating it's a 5 cent coin?

I just asked the question as follows:

"Question,

How does the addition of a typo make this worth anywhere near $900?"

Awaiting a response, I'll be sure to post it.

Got an answer:

"Dear ranmerc,

Because you can't expect such a phenominal error from ICCS(typo error? don't think so,here the one of the world's most prestigious coin grading agency has denominated a nickle to a penny).

Now I myself sold a PCGS error sample slab, but the value was only about 4X that of a regular one, and it was a special case because it was a sample slab. This guy is nuts. I would avoid at all costs. A typographical error does not inflate value to such a high mark. If that were the case, I think the time has come to start my own TPG, and issue coins with "mistakes", I could make millions.

I just can't believe the seller can actually believe he would get anything near that. Heck, I'd be surprised to get more than catalogue value.

We have a winner folks. I kept pestering him (politely of course)

"Dear ranmerc,

Maybe I was too impressed that I bought this coin at a very high price.
Best Regards

He's made it a $400 coin now. I just don't think he's getting the gist of this yet
