I agree and I enjoy the history behind the coins. Yes they were assciated with a terrible atrocity, but the coins themselves are simply a historic artifact. I have just started to look into getting some of these third reich coins. As a matter of fact, I just posted on the forum looking to buy some of these hostorical coins. I don't really care about which ones are valuable or not, I just would like to get some as part of my collection.

People think the swastika coins are so bad should see some of the things I have including currency used in the concentration camps (don't have any from the death camps yet, but eventually.) And a full set of the coins from the Lodz getto in Poland including the 20 mark piece. The 20 mark was issued just about 15 days before the getto was liquidated and Jews shipped out to the death camps. Supposedly most of the 20 mark pieces were picked up from along the train tracks. The people in the boxcars knew where they were going and that they would have no use for the coins when they got there, so they just dropped them out of the cars onto the tracks. You want some evil history that's it. Much worse than the simple use of coins by the general population that had swastikas on them.

George Santayana: "Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it."

Coin collecting preserves pieces of history...including history that we should not forget.

I concur with others, I obtained some of these coins for the history that's behind them, not for what the regime stood for...
I too have observed some interesting reactions from folks when they see these coins, however, most perceive them as historic artifacts as well...
I have specimens from mints A,D,E,F,G,J... from 1935 thru 1944 incl. 1,2,5,10,50 Reichspfennigs and 1,2,5 Reichsmarks...
I also have specimens from Italy during the same era... they were complicit, yet no one seems to raise an eyebrow about them...

I recently saw a conversation about this in a different forum. There were actually a few people suggesting that all Nazi era coins should be collected and melted down!

I guess my opinion is, if you don't like them, don't collect them. And don't assume that just because somone has some in their coin collection, that they are a Neo-Nazi.

HMMM, interesting idea though. So if we melted down all the coins from countries that started a war, were in a war, joined into a war, ended a war, the ones we now have would be worth a fortune.
The US South and the US North both were involved in a war not to long ago so lets melt down all their coins. Think that leaves the Peso? Wait, what about the Alamo? No, melt down all the Mexican coins too.
Now for you foreign coin people. Start melting down all your Italian Coins. Remember the Roman wars with everyone. And of course there is that War Mongering Napoleon, Alexander the Great, etc.
So this leave all of us to collect coin from the Stone age people. No proof they were into wars you know.

Good point, Carl...

However, I beg to differ...haha... there is anthropological evidence that suggests that Stone age people did fight wars.. or at least battles... grooves in bones found that could have only been made by stone tools!
Rest in Peace

There's another aspect to collecting German coins that no one has alluded to directly, that being the artistic aspect of the coins. The strong designs of most German coins - say from about 1880 through World War II and perhaps on to mid-century - appeal to me. They're carefully designed, balanced, and well-struck. And who else would include double mint marks on many of those coins except the cautious Germans?

Here are some examples from my collection that show the evolution of the coinage designs starting from 1934...

I REITERATE -- I obtained some of these coins for the history that's behind them, not for what the regime stood for...

Nice coins Agosos. Thanks for showing the French and Belgium coins. After seeing them, now I've got the itch to hit the local coin store and dig thru all of their old French and Belgium flips and see if they have any!

The French ones pop up on ebay and are normally pretty cheap.I did a bit of reasearch into the coins,(i was wondering why this family was so important lol) and it turns out the words,Travail, famille, patrie translate to work, family, fatherland. The nazis changed this from the republicans version of Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite,(Liberty, Equality, Fraternity).

Thanks Agosos... Appreciate the keywords... heading up to the coin store in a bit... those keywords you provided will help me filter thru the non-relevant coins.

Doesn't prove wars or battles, could just be simple murder, or even cannibalism. :)

Conder-> I knew someone was going to say that, as I was writing it!

Needless to say folks, I acquired some nice specimens to my WWII collection yesterday, including a bunch of 2 and 5 RM coins on the cheap. As I add them and their photos to my database, I'll post some pics up...
