hey cheetahcat, how much was the coin shop asking for on those French and Belgium coins? I am interested in getting some and they seem to be rather cheap. I am going to pick through some coins at my local shop soon and just wanted to know what you picked yours up for if you don't mind me asking. Thanks.

spaceace, I am a WWII coin (and currency to some extent) collector also. (judging by some of your posts, I assume you are, too)

I have gotten the majority of my coins searching the "5-for-a-dollar" world coin bin at my local coin shop. If your shop has a "junk" world bin like mine, go in there when you have some time and give it a good look-through. It can be a "gold-mine" if condition isn't overly important to you.

I have a boat-load of German coins from this era and it's never occurred to me to wonder what people would think of either them or the fact I have them. Their opinion just doesn't affect me.

They are History, just as much as any other coin I have is. And just like someone else has said (more than one, I believe...): "those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it." (sorry, the exact attribution escapes me at the moment)

If nothing else, at least I can look at the coins and think.. "never.. never again". And I show my children, and teach them.

On another note..

ok schmidty.. I gotta ask..

What does your signature CRAS AGAM mean?

SpaceAce,

These are the Belgium & French that I got. I think I got every decent year & denomination that the owner had in the store, though there were more Belgiums of the same years.

Belgium: 1939 1-Franc $.50 (pre-occ)
Belgium: 1942 1-Franc $1.50
Belgium: 1942 25c $2.00
Belgium: 1943 5c $1.00
Belgium: 1943 10c $1.50
Belgium: 1943 1-Franc $1.50
Belgium: 1943 5-Francs $2.50
Belgium: 1944 1-Franc $3.00
Belgium: 1944 2-Francs $3.00
France: 1942 1-Franc $1.00
France: 1944 1-Franc $1.50
France: 1944 1-Franc $1.50
France: 1944 1-Franc $1.50
France: 1944 1-Franc $1.50

I also picked up a bunch more German from the era too.

OK xshift, just for you:

CRAS AGAM is Latin for: "I will do it tomorrow"

"CRAS" as in procrastinate

At least, that's what I read on the 'net. So, it's gotta be true, right? Right?!?!?

This is a very good tread, with many solid points. Buck had the best of them and I have heard this Quote before. "People that forget past history are domed to repeat it" ....

As a coin collector, I like coins with history. History can be good or bad, but we can't ignore it. Thanks God I haven't meet (in person) these "extremist" people (nazi an anti-nazi); but I knew about the "problems" you can have with those coins.
It's sad to see the lack of tolerance of some people.

I have...in a few coin shops. I'll be looking at some 3R coins in the showcase.
As if on cue, the owner takes out an SS dagger, remarking "maybe you'd like this too",
Adding."dem Nazis were sure snappy dressers, weren't they"
I grind my teeth and prepare to hear the full spiel, which includes a tirade against "Jews wrecking the economy." Yeah, right, ok.I'm backing away from the counter now.
So yeah- thank God you don't hear this stuff.
It takes all kinds, I guess...and I try to laugh it off.

Good point, Carl...

However, I beg to differ...haha... there is anthropological evidence that suggests that Stone age people did fight wars.. or at least battles... grooves in bones found that could have only been made by stone tools!

GREAT. Just what I was a fraid of. Now I have to figure out how to melt all those Granite carved coins from back then.

Not being a foreign coin collector but I think if my memory serves me right, not many German person of political popularity on their coins from the WW2 ara. All those famous people from the German country in that time frame you would think their coins would be flooded with their faces. Look how our coins are full of people. So what happened to all the countries over there during WW2 for people on coins? Anyone know if Hitler was on any of them?

I've been having a very difficult time keeping my "Granite edge incused coins" in their holes in my fake leather Granite coin album. The album is a Lighthouse.....not a Dansco....but it's sweet looking ! Anyway.....the holes don't quite seem to match the actual diameter of the Granite coins and they keep falling out.
This is becoming a costly and dangerous disposition, as the coins are 123,000 years old ! I cannot risk breaking any more of them.....any suggestions ?

No he wasn't (thank goodness)

No Third Reich small denominations had any people on them, but various 2 and 5 Reichmark coins had Hindenburg, Luther and Schiller on them.

Just won a 1935 Germany Hindenberg 5RM with eagle at Rev, No swastika, at a local club auction unc at the equivalent of us$4

That coin is mentioned here as the 3rd Reich coin.

I was told it was a coin of the 2nd Reich and not the 3rd Reich? which is it?

thank you for any info

Your 1935 is a 3rd Reich. 3rd Reich 5RM coins are from 1933 - 1939.
