Here's a high-resolution picture of a genuine 1872-H obverse for comparision. At first glance, I was curious about the lettering on VICTORIA, especially that T. Unless that's camera angle, it looks distorted.

Thank you DV The E in regina is flat along the bottom while the E in del curves upward about halfway along the bottom, ther is no line along the bottom of th LCW to give the depth effect... dont know how else to put that ,, and the top lip is hooked with the open part of the mouth extending down along the frown line....must be a fake ?

Hmmm...I'm hardly an expert on these Victoria coins, which is why I posted the big photo. There are a few Canadian collectors here which are much better with these coins--perhaps they'll chime in soon?

It is hard to tell from your pictures.. are you able to post larger clear pictures? Here is a picture of the obverse of a 1872H 50 cent coin that you can compare yours to (this was posted in this forum last year, it is an authentic coin.) Is there a coin dealer by you that you can get his / her opinion?

hello Stoney.... may we ask what you actually paid for this coin and what the feedback of the seller is? at first glance, your coins looks ok....but...only a "coin in hand" with an authentic coin next to it will tell for sure...

Here is what I saw initially that got me wondering. Perhaps it's just due to camera distortion, because I've never seen a T on this coin shaped like that.

DVCollector, I think you are absolutely right when you say the picture is distorted. Here is his first picture and the T appears to be proper.

hi I received a reply from the seller, he told me the coins are good, that some 72's do have the mouth open, and that these were certified b4, but removed from plastic to be put in books as many collectors do, he has also offered me to send them back to him, and he will send to ICCS,and if come back bad he will make good on them, he does have 100% feed back in a few thousand dealings. I know that feed back is very important to dealers, who stick around , this is why I didn't leave negative feed back. I paid $165 and a wee bit more for the 1870 not alot of money,, but enough for me. the dealer held the one coin for me , waited for payment,,and he does seem one the up & up. But the mouth bothered me the most,, the T is good, I took the picture (learned here), by putting a 7.5 loupe up to the lens of my digital, that probally y the distortion. I not sure what to do,,,not so sure it is up to him to pay or get them graded , buying coins raw is risky on grading and what to pay for them I think, being authentict is another story... I just wanted a couple of coins to sit out and let friends & family hold & look at them, guess at what they worth(maybe tell them worth more than what they actually are :) . Maybe I should just send them off, and if they come back okay everything good if not, I get my money back. I just getting back into my coin collecting, didn't worry so much about fakes 30 years ago.. I have alot to learn.

up date: I took the coin and a few others to a dealer,, he told me my 1915 dime had lettering on the observe, wrong that was either deliberate tried to be damaged or was added after they made it :S, this was from another person other than who I bought the fifty cent peices from. the fifty cent peices this dealer said had inconsistant wear one side to the other as well as the wear was not consitant with the rim wear and the dealer wouldn't ever buy them. So , I got home and asked for my money back,,but as it is I am runnin out of time for protection from ebay,, so I started a claim, just to protect myself. The collector is quite steamed , asked if the dealer had as much experiance as him. And this dealer probally doesn't; except when one person says one thing and another says the opposite and I am left with the unsure coins what am I to do? A most unpleasant experiance. hhbkiddo, can't email you was told too, cold you email me

Here is a good example of the paranoia (sp?) that counterfeit coins are causing in Numismatics. If the pictures are not clear enough to be certain...stay away....The information is available for every collector to educate themselves. If a deal sounds too good to be true....it probably is.........and just to add......I see nothing wrong with the images of the coin you posted.
